Behind the Business: Trisha Flanagan
Meet Trisha Flanagan, Jewellery Artist
Trisha Flanagan, a graduate of Alberta University of the Arts' Jewelry and Metals department, runs her own studio in Calgary, AB, Canada. Her work reflects her belief that jewellery should possess purpose beyond beauty, even if its significance is known only to the wearer.
Q: Why did you start your business?
A: I started my business because I couldn't find the jewelry I wanted to wear. I'm a trained bench jeweler, so I decided to make what I had in mind. My friends liked what I was wearing, and I often ended up giving it to them straight off my body. Then strangers started asking where I got my jewelry, and that's when I realized I could turn this into a business. It all began with a simple need, and now I'm creating pieces that resonate with people.
Q: What do you love most about running your own business?
A: What truly lights up my heart in running my own business is the deep connection I make with people. It's incredibly moving when I learn how one of my creations has touched someone's life, bringing them strength during challenging treatments or becoming a cherished memorial piece for a loved one, even a beloved pet. These moments often bring sentimental me to tears, and they remind me why I'm so passionate about what I do.
Q: What is your favorite product and why?
A: My go-to favorites are the swear word pieces, particularly the very versatile word "F*ck" morse code bracelet. When I began making them, I'd often layer a couple together, choosing depending on the circumstances or my mood that day. If the kids were giving me grief, “F*ck”-“Patience” worked well. It was a fun and slightly cheeky way to express myself without them knowing. For those moments when I needed a little extra encouragement and a boost of confidence, I'd go with a combo like "F*ck it"-"I am enough". These pieces are like my personal affirmations, reflecting my mindset and adding a touch of attitude to my style.
